Der Spiegel Torture-Tests the World's Toughest Phone

Der Spiegel subjected the XP1 to a rigorous series of tests and published the result in a story entitled “Mission Accomplished, Mobile Phone Broken.“

Yes, the XP1’s screen did succumb -- when it was run over by a “dreitonner" (three-ton) truck.

Der Spiegel's firm but fair reviewer also took a few pokes at the XP1’s lack of glamorous looks, but added that “The toughest phone is not supposed to be a beautiful phone -- it should instead be stable and quite extraordinary.” The review concluded with a quick jab at the phone’s lack of cutting edge multimedia features, but the reviewer also added that the XP1 is marketed as a tool and not a fashion accessory, adding that some companies add trendy features to rugged gear that results in “detours to the fashionable status symbol without real added value.”

The complete story is here (in German) and there’s a spiffy slide show documenting Der Speigel’s testing process here.
